The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce will hold a community conversation aimed at helping people better understand House Bill 2 (HB2). The Chamber, along with community partners will kick off the conversation at a community event on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. at Durham Central Park. This event is free and open to the public.
“Anyone interested in becoming more familiar with House Bill 2, along with the legislative and judicial process associated with the bill should attend this event,” said John White, vice president of Public Policy for the Durham Chamber. “Sunday’s event is just the launching point of a long-term effort to keep the citizenry informed as this ever-evolving process continues.”
The campaign includes social media efforts and a website that will become a clearing house of information for those wanting to learn more, get engaged and take action.
Panelists for Sunday’s conversation includes:
- Joe Stewart, E.D. NC Free Enterprise Foundation
- Rick Glazier, Executive Director, NC Justice Center
- Carolyn McAllaster, founder, Health Justice Clinic at Duke University
Local DJ Jess “PlayPlay” Dilday will help set the atmosphere for the event, along with several food trucks.
“Our goal is to educate and inform in a comfortable and fun environment,” said Geoff Durham, Chamber president. “This is the type of event that you bring the entire family to participate in.”
On April 18, the Durham Chamber released a statement opposing House Bill 2 and all legislation which discriminates against men, women, governments and private companies traveling to and doing business in North Carolina. At that same time, the Chamber also announced intentions to host public sessions designed to educate and inform the Durham citizenry of the impact of HB2.
