History of Durham

Durham has successfully transformed its business landscape from one based upon tobacco and textile to a modern, cutting-edge economy.

Established in 1906, the Chamber has been an integral part of the Durham community for more than 100 years. Businesses, organizations, and agencies who choose to be a part of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce do so because it is a thriving, pro-active business leadership organization. We have proven that working with our community partners and business members results in a prosperous, healthy community for businesses and residents. There’s no other organization in the Research Triangle region with the depth and breadth of relationships that can help you.

Because our roots are deep in Durham, no other organization has the ability to convene the industries of business, government and education at the highest level.

WE KNOW THAT SUCCESS REQUIRES RISK.

It was the Durham Chamber that made the first investments in local start-ups that today has led to Durham having the unofficial title of “start-up capital of the south.”

The Durham Chamber created the Start-up Stampede that gave Durham several of its recognized brands today, including The Art of Cool.

We are not your grandfather’s chamber. Our idea of business is innovative and inclusive, progressive and forward thinking. And we do our very best work for our members. We are a resource that we encourage the business community to take full advantage of; from the expertise of our staff to our many partners.
