The Durham County’s proposed 2016 bond referendum will benefit four Durham educational agencies including:

Proposed Bond Projects:

1. Durham Public Schools ($90 million)– GO Bond funds will largely support life cycle renovation (20 year renovation of building systems and finishes), building, parking, roof, and HVAC enhancements and replacements across a broad range of elementary, middle and high schools within the Durham Public School system. GO Bond funds will also support new construction at a number of schools and may also support the building of a new elementary school. GO Bonds will also support infrastructure needs for various operations and administrative buildings within the Durham Public School system.
2. Main Library Renovation ($44.3 million) – GO Bond funding for the Durham County Main Library will support a 20,000 square foot expansion of library space and upgrades to all areas of the building. Only the existing structural system will remain and be modified to accommodate programmatic/design changes, all other large systems within the building will be removed and completely replaced. In addition the majority of the building envelope will be removed and replaced to increase energy efficiency, daylighting/views, and overall building appearance. A more functional parking layout will also be created. , while other site elements will include secure, enclosed parking for the library’s Bookmobiles, a new entry plaza, site circulation, and other useable outdoor areas. The building entry sequence will be reconfigured to eliminate the existing multi-level dual entry and consolidate to a new singular entry point.
3. Durham Technical Community College ($20 million) – GO Bond funding will support a 20,000 to 30,000 square foot expansion of a campus building to provide additional space for Automotive Systems and Construction trades as well as relocate classrooms and labs for Industrial systems, Architectural Technology and other industrial and engineering technology programs. Funds will also support creation of additional surface parking and the construction of a new Facilities Service Building, to be used for shipping, receiving, warehousing and storage, and general work space for Facilities Services personnel.
4. North Carolina Museum of Life and Science ($14.1 million) – GO Bond funding will support expanded parking with a new parking deck, investments in exhibits maintenance, sustainability upgrades and infusion projects for existing outdoor and indoor exhibits. Funding will replace old indoor classrooms with a mini-campus of woodland classrooms as well as renovations to the current visitor entry areas including upgraded technology and expanded parking. Lastly, funding will complete work to provide safe and accessible group entry for the growing numbers of school trip visitors.
