Helping to build the Triangle
Over their 40+ years in the Triangle, S&ME has contributed in meaningful ways to the development of the Triangle area into the desirable place to live and thrive. S&ME works with the road builders, manufacturing plant constructors and the developers who have shown a vision to transform blighted areas into productive spaces.
The American Tobacco Campus, a former historic factory complex and national historic district located in Durham, is one of their successes. Now a multi-use development, the area was once a rundown complex of six industrial buildings and an old coal shed. S&ME worked to remediate contamination at the site but also provided geotechnical services necessary for the developers to revitalize the historical buildings. The campus is now part of the Historic District that also includes the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the Durham Performing Arts Center, an area that attracts residents, businesses and shoppers to Downtown Durham.
S&ME works with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on a variety of road and bridge projects that call upon multitude of specialties from pavement condition analyses to bridge foundation design. They are working on a multi-year project surveying the condition of 60,000 miles of state roadway and is also on the design-build team for the East End Connector project in Durham that will link US 70 to NC 147.
Pharmaceuticals are big business in the Triangle. S&ME is working with Purdue Pharma during construction of their new 188,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Durham. Another key member of the global bio manufacturing landscape is building a $1.9 billion dollar expansion to their existing facility in the area and S&ME is among the consultants working to provide geotechnical and materials testing services.
