Frontier Communications (NASDAQ: FTR) recently announced that the company’s three years of capital expenditures in North Carolina hit a total of $79.9 million, including $21.3 million in 2013.

In addition to Frontier’s own capital expenditures, many Frontier markets in North Carolina will benefit from additional support totaling $1,557,725 from the Federal Communications Commission’s Connect America Fund (CAF).  CAF funding will allow Frontier to accelerate broadband availability in North Carolina.  Frontier offers broadband, digital phone service, satellite television service, Frontier satellite broadband, FTR Energy Services, customer premises equipment (telephone systems, support for commercial businesses and e-911 applications), Ethernet, Dedicated Internet Access, data center services, and web security/data back-up/personal identity protection and more through Frontier Secure.

Frontier has invested $79.9 million of its own capital during the past three years to increase broadband access and improve network infrastructure across Frontier’s territory.   This investment in North Carolina is vital to continuing economic development, increasing opportunities for consumers, and supporting all types and sizes of businesses in the state.

“The effect of our investments in North Carolina is felt throughout the communities we serve,” said Dennis Bloss, vice president and general manager.  “Our powerful network, driven by our dedicated teams who are residents and experts about the needs of their communities, is delivering solid benefits to our customers and shareholders.  Our team is hitting our stride in the state, and there is more to come.”

This investment over the past three years provided the option of access to High-Speed Internet in more than 99% of the 133,000 households that Frontier serves in the Durham market. Speeds in excess of 10 mbps or greater, are available to 76% of these households.  In 2014, Frontier will triple the backhaul capacity leaving Durham to the outside world, ensuring there is sufficient room to meet the growing bandwidth needs of current customers.

“Now that we have increased the number of households that have High-Speed Internet availability, and increased the speeds available to their homes, we want to ensure the customer experience continues to be a positive one.

We add customers to our network daily and with this latest investment, we have the capacity to handle those demands for years to come,” said Bloss.

Frontier’s investment extends beyond the home, allowing the expansion of fiber-based Ethernet services to more businesses with speeds as high as 10 Gigabytes per second throughout the Frontier footprint in North Carolina.  Frontier also launched copper-based Ethernet services for small and medium businesses with dedicated bandwidth, advanced service level agreements and speeds up to 60 mbps.

“The Durham market has a wide variety of businesses with varying needs.  We invested heavily in this market to ensure we can meet the needs of large enterprise through our robust fiber network, but also provide a more affordable option for our small and medium businesses that don’t yet have the same bandwidth needs, but still need reliable, dedicated service,” Bloss added.

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) services were also launched in the Durham market. SIP is a signaling communications protocol, widely used for controlling multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.  “Our large enterprise customers asked for this service to better manage calling between multiple locations and to control costs.”

Bloss concluded, “We are committed to making sure there is nothing holding a business back from locating in Durham.  Whether it is functionality such as SIP calling, fast reliable bandwidth for their business or employee homes, or complex multi-location private networks, Frontier has invested to meet any need.”
