The Better Business Bureau of Eastern North Carolina recently honored Bob Moulton and National Pawn with the Better Business Bureau 2011 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. The Torch Awards were created to showcase ethical companies and charities in eastern North Carolina that build trust, advertise honestly, tell the truth, remain transparent, and honor their promises.

Along with the Torch Award, in the past year, Bob has received official recognition from the Orange and Durham County Public schools for his Band CAMP program (through Band CAMP, Moulton donated more than 600 instruments and $6,000 to middle-school band programs in the Triangle), he was elected to his second term as President of the NC Pawnbroker’s Association, and named Pawn Broker of the Year by the National Pawnbrokers Association.

Last week, it was my turn to submit a blog post to our communications department, but I was blank on a topic, until the morning it was due. I suppose the erratic weather may have had something to do with it, or the book I was reading called The Coming Jobs War. Either way, it’s something that I’ve long espoused and strive for in my professional life, and that is I seek to be delighted by sales people and service providers. However, I’ve learned this is by far a common retail experience no matter the guy in the colorful apron at my local big box store, or a service professional – no one seems to care if I patronize their business again. Why is this? From everything I hear, although the economy is better, we are in no way back to our pre-recession days, yet business owners and the staff who interface with the public act as if there is an overabundance of people waiting to do business with them. And this is not unique to the private sector as the public sector has long had this reputation.

I’d like to encourage readers to demonstrate the art of delighting their next client or customer, and work to integrate this practice into their business model. To me, to delight means to go beyond simply fulfilling an order or request for a product or service, but instead present solutions and never ever use the word “no”. Even if a client/customer request is outside the scope of your business, there is very likely someone you can refer them to who does offer the product/service. THIS is how you delight someone. In the process you’ll have created a positive experience for that individual, and now they’re more likely to think of YOU when they need your product or service.

I guess, some might refer to this as going the extra mile, but in this day and age – should be done barefoot, over hot coals. I jest, but you get the idea. That said, this would certainly show one’s commitment to creating a memorable client/customer experience. Do this often and I assure you clients will sing your praises, and customers will return tenfold, for very few are. By virtue of this fact, you’ll stand out in the pack, and isn’t that what every business wants? Do it today! Delight your next client/customer and see for yourself.

 -Adrian Brown

When we ask businesses why they come to or stay in Durham, the most frequently cited answer is our talent pool. We know, all too well, that a talent pipeline must be continually nurtured if it is to grow. Since one of our goals is to facilitate growth in the region, we support organizations that seek to ensure our workforce stays strong. Durham’s Partnership for Children does just that. Their goals are to:

-Ensure that all children enter school healthy and prepared to succeed.

-Improve children’s early care and education programs so that they are safe, healthy and provide opportunities for children to learn skills they need for success in school.

-Provide parents with tools that support them in raising healthy, happy, successful children.

-Ensure that children have access to preventive health care.

But don’t take our word for it! Check out their Public Service Announcement. It was filmed in Durham this past November with the help of Durham parents and children ages 0-5, and many community partners – including elementary schools, child care centers, churches, and pediatrician’s offices. It is a true reflection of the community in which we live.

Show your love for Durham’s young children by watching now.

Please visit www.dpfc.net for more information on the work and mission of the Partnership.

We’ve gotten tons of feedback about the promotional materials for our upcoming Annual Meeting. As we like to say around the Chamber office, it’s totally “Durhamy”. The Chamber was very fortunate to team up with Seth Patrick for this project.

So, who is the man behind the bulls?

Seth is a designer, artist, and illustrator. He moved to Durham three years ago from Virginia Beach, Virginia when his wife started her medical residency at UNC- Chapel Hill. Most days he stays busy telecommuting as the main graphic designer for a New Mexico based consulting firm, but he has the flexibility that allows him to take on all forms of freelance projects. In Virginia he worked as a graphic designer for a small publishing company and then as the art director of Port Folio Weekly, a local alternative weekly (think of the Independent here) based out of Norfolk, Virginia.

He really enjoys creating information graphics, small publications, posters, company logos and business cards. His true passion, however, is in creating digital illustrations. Seth’s distinct style is one that emphasizes a warm color palette and a grainy texturing method to give the work a whimsical, retro feeling to them. A lot of work is based off of photos, allowing him to recreate cityscapes and buildings, or re-imagining a photo of a person or historical scene. But a lot of humorous characters featuring pop-culture icons can also be found within his portfolio. He really enjoys any project that challenges him, so he is always willing to take on a new or different assignment with this medium. Since everything is digital, Seth feels he has an advantage in his ability to turn his quality of work at such a high rate. This also allows him to combine his design and illustration skills when he creates a concert poster, promotional postcard, or event promotion.

Since moving to Durham, Seth has found inspiration from the many creatives here. He also finds inspiration living in Durham itself, and through this has created illustrations depicting downtown, the Lucky Strike tower, blu seafood, and a few other places he sees on a regular basis.

For more information about Seth you can go to his website here or follow him on twitter @seth_patrick. If you are interested in contacting him about work his email is seth@sethpatrick.com.
