The “World’s Smallest Office” – The Smoffice, has won the title of Best Unconventional Project at the 2013 International Chamber of Commerce World Chambers Federation Competition.
Competition finalists presented their projects during the 8th World Chambers Congress in Doha, Qatar April 22-25. The Smoffice was the only finalist from the United States and is the first US recipient of the award. Competitors hailed from Slovenia, Finland, Korea and Nuremburg, Germany.
“We are thrilled by this honor,” said Casey Steinbacher, president and CEO of the Durham Chamber. “To recognize by your peers on an international platform is phenomenal. Now, the world knows Durham!”
The Smoffice, an initiative of the Durham Chamber and Downtown Durham Inc. to attract entrepreneurs to downtown Durham, received dozens of entries from entrepreneurs from across the U.S. The national competition to give away office space in the storefront window of Beyu Caffe and a six-week stay at a downtown condo garnered over 70 press hits from news organizations including Fast Company, TechCrunch, the New York Times and NPR.
