How can you support the Durham community? Shop local! Of course, there is no better time to start than right now! I know it’s not December just yet, but the holiday season is in full force! Through December 4, Sustain-A-Bull is hosting Shop Independent Durham Week with over 30 participating local businesses offering discounts, special events, and even a scavenger hunt.
Supporting local establishments keeps money circulating in the local economy. Consider taking your visiting relatives for meals at a locally owned and operated restaurant or buy a gift certificate to a local place to encourage your friends to try something new.
According to Sustain-A-Bull’s website, for every $100 you spend at a national chain, $13 stays in our community. Spend the same amount with an independent, local business and you will keep $45 local–more than tripling the local economic benefits of your spending. Imagine if all of that Black Friday shopping was done with Durham shops!
There are a number of places you can shop – the Brighleaf District, Ninth Street, downtown Durham and other locations throughout the city. Don’t forget that small businesses make up 80% of our local market! The sales tax from local stores also supports the area and though it is tempting to shop online, none of that money goes back to Durham!
When you shop local, you know that what you spend directly benefits your community!
