In October 2012, the  Durham Housing Authority was awarded a $300,000 Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) planning grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The objective of the two-year grant is to develop a transformation plan for Southeast Central Durham, which includes the McDougald Terrace Public Housing Community.  The CNI target area is bordered by Highway NC-147 on the North, Elmira Park Avenue on the South, Bacon Street on the East and Roxboro Street / the American Tobacco Trail on the West.

The funding provides the community the resources needed to craft a comprehensive, community-driven plan to revitalize public or other HUD-assisted housing and transform distressed neighborhoods. The three core goals of the CNI program are housing, neighborhoods and people.  Seven focus groups, which are composed of residents, stakeholders, and community partners, address the core goals from the perspective of health, seniors, transportation, youth, economic self-sufficiency, safety, and education.

As this is a community wide endeavor, the input from local businesses is important to the planning process.  DHA asks that business owners take a moment to fill out the Neighborhood Business Survey.
