Last summer I attended a Chamber “Business After Hours” at Caring House in Durham. “Caring House, is a non-profit organization that provides peace of mind through affordable housing to Duke Cancer patients, but it is so much more. Caring House more importantly provides a healing environment and a positive and supportive community,” explains Executive Director Sheridan van Wagenberg.
Immediately, I volunteered. I work on the “Meal Program,” with Sasha Zabavin, Caring House’s Director of Annual Giving. While Caring House provides so much to its guests, it’s unable to provide meals. Sasha states;
“After a long day at the hospital, we want our guests to come back and enjoy the supportive and calming atmosphere. Having meals provided through civic groups, businesses, restaurants, etc. takes the stress of making dinner away. They can come back after treatment, relax and enjoy each other’s company.”
One Chamber Member who’s been extremely generous to Caring House is, City Barbeque, https://www.citybbq.com/location/durham/, on Hwy 54 in Durham.
. City Barbeque donates dinner for 30 people twice a month! That’s 720 dinners a year! When I asked, Why? Manager Tim Zombek said, “City Barbeque is grateful for the opportunity to support the wonderful people at Caring House. The only thing we love as much as barbeque is our community and we are honored to lend a helping hand.”
I wanted to write this article because, 2 of my strongest beliefs are:
- Do business with people who do business with you. And…
- Do business with people who make your community a far better place.
City Barbeque and Caring House are making Durham a FAR better place! I sincerely hope you strive to support both of them.
